How to start your system

If you have just purchased a Ecolet system, then this guide on how to start up your system is for you.
One your Ecolet system is fully installed and the ventilation system is running, you need to add a starter bed before the system can be used.
For Ecolet manual. Automatic and Automatic LX
Step-by-step guild
• First you will need to acquire your bulking agent (carbon materials). These can be sourced from WCTNZ or suppliers from around NZ. We recommend wood shavings as the starter-bed material (bulking agent). In some cases, due to supply problems or personal preference it is not practical to use wood shavings. The reason we recommend wood shavings is because they are high in carbon and are of a good texture to trap oxygen and provide repertory airways for the life of the compost.
Ecolet system benefit from a mixture of wood shavings and COCO Peat or Peat Moss. Please see best bulking agent guide here [link].
Alternative bulking agents are discussed in the Operating Manual for your consideration.
• Once you have your wood shavings mixture you will need to spread the bulking material in bottom of the composting chamber. Open the compost cover by pressing the toilet seat down. Poor the bag of WCT Eco Mix (10L supplied with the system) down into the system. Add one bag of WCT Microbe Mix into the system as well.
• You will need to add a little water to this starter bed - about one litre is all that’s needed. This wets out the starter bed to encourage Microbial growth for effective composting.
• Turn the mixer handle 6 times in the clockwise direction (Manual model only), or press and hold the micro switch behind the seat (Automatic models only), until the mixer stops (approximately 5 seconds), then release the button. This allows the mixing arms to complete their cycle between each press (approximately 1 min.). Repeat 2-3 times until the mulch is evenly disbursed through the toilet.
Note; Approximately 50% of the starter bed will fall through the grate and fill up the tray. THIS IS NORMAL - DO NOT EMPTY THE TRAY!
• Adjust your thermostat to the appropriate setting. See supplied Manual for guidance.
Note; Important! WCTNZ cannot guarantee the operation of your unit unless you are using approved Bulking Agent and Microbe mixtures. For more information on the bulking agent mixtures see here [link]
Note; on-going maintenance.
It is very important to add a Microbial mixture to your toilet after you have emptied the tray. Once you have placed the tray back into your Ecolet, add 1 cup of WCT Microbe Mix directly into the toilet bowl.
CONGRATULATIONS! You have now completed the setup of your new composting toilet.
For Ecolet Slimline (on-floor).
Step-by-step guide
• Remove top of pedestal. Ensure compost chamber is properly placed inside the pedestal.
• Lift and fold back the chamber lid. (Only close the lid when leaving the chamber outside for further composting)
• Add 5 litres of the Bulking Agent WCT Eco Mix (supplied with the system) into the compost chamber bottom and spread evenly.
Note; the Bulking Agent contains fine grade COCO Peat or Peat Moss 20% and untreated wood shavings 80%.
• Replace the top of pedestal and EcoLet is ready to be used!

These steps are used every time a new empty chamber is needed.
Note; there is no need to add Microbial mixtures to this type of system.
CONGRATULATIONS! You have now completed the setup of your new composting toilet.

For Ecolet Separera NE 30 and NE 40 (on-floor and below-floor).
Step-by-step guide
• Ensure the compost chamber is properly placed inside the pedestal for the NE30 and that the composting chamber is level and aligned under the chute for the NE40.
• Press the toilet seat down to open the chamber screens to access the dry solids chamber.
Add 5 litres of the Bulking Agent, WCT Eco Mix (supplied with the system) into the solids chamber. There is no need to spread the bulking agent out for the Separera Models.

Note; DO not put any down the urinals as this will block the urine pipe
Note; the Bulking Agent contains fine grade COCO Peat 20% and untreated wood shavings 80%.

These steps are repeated every time a new empty chamber is needed.
Note; there is no need to add Microbial mixtures to this type of system but the toilet urinal will benefit from a treatment cleaner like Ecogreen Toilet & Urinal cleaner as it will help keep it odourless for up to 30 days.
