Bionova How To Start Your System

Bionova Leading the Future of Waterless Sanitation

Getting your Bionova system started properly makes a big difference to how it performs over time. The Bionova Cabin Series is designed to be simple to use once it is installed correctly, but like any composting toilet, it still needs the right setup at the beginning.

This page is a practical overview for New Zealand customers. WCTNZ® will provide model-specific guidance with supply, including startup material recommendations and NZ-use notes for your installation.

    Before You Start

Before first use, make sure the installation is complete and the unit is ready to operate. The toilet should be positioned correctly, the vent system should be connected properly, and the power supply should be active. If you are using the Bionova Cabin Plus, the urine separator and urine container should also be fitted correctly before the system is put into service.

Startup is not complicated, but it is important. A good first setup gives the system the best chance to settle into consistent operation, especially in holiday homes and cabins where use patterns may vary.

Preparing the System for First Use

The Bionova system should be started with the correct preparation inside the unit before normal use begins. This helps create the right conditions for the system to operate as intended from the start.

WCTNZ® will provide guidance on the recommended startup material and the amount to use for your model. The exact approach matters, because startup preparation affects early moisture balance, airflow behaviour, and overall ease of use in the first few weeks.

If the system is started too dry, too wet, or without the correct setup, it can lead to avoidable performance issues early on. That is why we recommend following the startup guidance carefully rather than guessing.

    Powering On and Checking Operation

Once the unit is prepared and connected, switch the system on and confirm it is operating normally. The Bionova Cabin Series uses powered internal functions to support everyday operation, so the startup stage should include a quick check that the unit is responding correctly.

At this point, the main thing is to confirm that the system has power and is running as expected. The internal operating functions are designed to support normal use automatically once the setup is complete. If something does not seem right during startup, it is best to contact WCTNZ® early so we can help you correct it before regular use begins.

    First Use and Early Operation

After the startup preparation is complete and the unit is running properly, the system can be used normally. Bionova is designed to automate key internal functions, so once the toilet is set up correctly, day-to-day use is straightforward.

The first few days are the most important period for establishing a good routine. This is when the system begins settling into its operating cycle and you get a feel for how it behaves in your building. In most cases, a smooth startup comes down to correct setup, correct use, and a properly planned vent installation.

For NZ holiday properties, use patterns can be quite different from full-time living. Some sites are used heavily for short periods and then left for stretches of time. Bionova can suit that style of use well, but it still benefits from being started correctly and used consistently during occupied periods.

    Bionova Cabin Plus Startup Note

The Bionova Cabin Plus includes urine separation and a urine container, so the startup process also includes checking that these components are fitted correctly before use. This is an important part of the Cabin Plus setup and helps the system manage liquid load as intended.

WCTNZ® will provide guidance on handling and caring for these components as part of your startup and maintenance information. If you are unsure whether the Cabin or Cabin Plus is the better fit for your building, we can help you compare them before purchase.

    The First Week Matters

The first week of use is the best time to pay attention to how the system is performing. This does not mean complex monitoring. It simply means checking that the unit is operating normally, the installation is working as intended, and the toilet is being used in line with the startup guidance.

If the venting, power, and startup preparation have all been done properly, the system should settle into a practical routine quite quickly. If you notice anything unusual in the first week, such as airflow concerns or unexpected performance, WCTNZ® can help you work through it early.

    When to Contact WCTNZ®

If you are unsure about any part of the startup process, get in touch with WCTNZ® before continuing. It is always easier to correct a startup issue at the beginning than after the system has already been in use for some time.

We can help with installation checks, startup preparation, early-use questions, and model-specific guidance for New Zealand conditions, so your Bionova system gets the best start possible.
