Before using the batching system, create a simple starter bed so the composting biology has the right structure and support. Spread a 50mm layer of bulking agent evenly across the base of the chamber, then add microbes as per the instructions on the pack. Repeat the same process each time you start a new batch (i.e., whenever you put a fresh chamber into service).
Before using the continuous system, pre-fill it with bulking agent to the level of the baffle, then pre-hydrate the system by wetting the bulking agent with water. Add microbes. This one-time preparation is all that’s required to get a continuous system going when you first commission it.
Use a structural, carbon-rich material such as wood shavings to maintain aeration, best mixed with hemp to support increased decomposition. This combination gives the microbes a breathable, absorbent matrix to work in.
