This page provides a practical overview of what’s involved in installing a Passway™ grease trap. You will need to select the right location, prepare a stable base, set correct pipe alignment and fall, and commission the chamber correctly before handing it over to use.
Start with location planning. Grease traps are typically installed outdoors and below ground level, positioned as close as practical to the drain source (for example, the kitchen sink line). The goal is to intercept FOG early—before it cools in long pipe runs—and to keep the unit accessible for routine cleaning. Just as importantly, placement should avoid areas likely to be affected by stormwater or surface water so the chamber isn’t subjected to flooding or unwanted inflow.
Base preparation matters. A stable, level bedding layer helps the unit sit correctly, keeps lids and seals aligned, and reduces the chance of movement over time. When installed in paved areas, allow enough rim clearance to ensure the cover can be removed cleanly during servicing. This is one of those small details that makes a big difference to whether maintenance stays straightforward over the long term.
Once the unit is seated and level, set up inlet and outlet connections using the supplied rubber jointers (or industry-standard equivalents) and ensure the downstream drain line has appropriate fall. Grease trap performance is strongly linked to correct hydraulics: steady flow-through, correct fall, and no backfall sections that could hold grease-laden water upstream.
Commissioning is part of installation, not an optional extra. The grease trap should be initially filled with clean water until flow through the outlet is observed, and internal components (such as the basket) must be installed as required. A careful final check of seals, lid latches, and the surrounding ground finish will help ensure the unit stays odour-tight and serviceable.
Finally, keep warranty and compliance expectations in mind. Many installations—particularly commercial or consented works—will require a licensed plumber sign-off and adherence to the written instructions and applicable codes.
