In 1971, Hardy Sundberg of Sun-Mar™ developed the world’s first self-contained composting toilet.

For the first time, a self-contained toilet could be installed in a bathroom and would evaporate liquids and compost solids. The next major technical breakthrough came in 1979 with Sun-Mar’s third-generation toilet, incorporating a rotating drum as the composting chamber.

The Sun-Mar™ BioDrum™ approach uses separate areas for composting, evaporation and compost finishing, helping optimise the environment for each function. The result is a long-standing composting toilet range with models for different residential, bach, cabin and larger-system applications.
