A dedicated place for grease-trap service waste
Grease traps protect downstream wastewater systems by collecting material that then has to be removed during servicing.
On a conventional commercial site, that material is commonly removed by a waste contractor. On remote, off-grid and privately serviced sites, a suitable on-site management method can provide another option where local requirements allow it.
The WCTNZ® Grease Compost Box is designed specifically for this task.
Instead of adding concentrated grease-trap residue directly to an ordinary garden compost bin, the waste is introduced into a dedicated box containing a dry, absorbent carbon-rich bulking matrix.
The objective is to distribute the grease and moisture through a much larger volume of structured organic material so the contents can remain mixed, aerated and manageable.
How it works
Add, absorb, mix and mature
The box begins with a prepared charge of dry organic bulking material.
During grease-trap servicing, the appropriate grease, food-solids and mixed trap residue is added to the bulking matrix rather than poured into a normal compost heap.
The contents are then thoroughly mixed so the grease and moisture are distributed through the carbon material instead of remaining as a concentrated wet layer.
Additional dry bulking material is added whenever required to maintain a loose, absorbent structure with no standing free liquid.
- Add grease-trap service residue in controlled batches.
- Cover the fresh material with dry carbon bulking media.
- Mix or turn the box contents thoroughly after loading.
- Add additional dry material if the mix becomes wet, compacted or strongly odorous.
- Retain sufficient free volume within the box for ongoing mixing and aeration.
- Allow the material to continue conditioning and maturing before final use or removal.
Bulking material
Carbon and structure are central to the process
Suitable bulking materials may include a mixture of dry, untreated carbon-rich organics such as:
- Untreated wood shavings.
- Untreated coarse sawdust.
- Fine wood chip or dry bark.
- Shredded uncoated cardboard or paper.
- Dry leaves and similar fibrous plant material.
- Mature compost or leaf mould as part of the biological matrix.
Do not use treated-timber sawdust, painted wood waste, plastic-containing material or chemically contaminated absorbents.

Intended for Passway™ M-43F installations and similar lower-volume grease-trap applications.

Grease Compost Box sizing is based on providing enough bulking-media volume and mixing space for the expected servicing waste. The compost box therefore does not simply duplicate the litre capacity of the grease trap.

What can be added
Kitchen-origin grease-trap service waste
The system is intended for residues originating from normal kitchen wastewater captured by a compatible grease trap, including:
- Separated fats, oils and grease.
- Food-related solids removed from the trap or basket.
- Grease-rich sludge associated with normal trap servicing.
- A limited amount of residual wastewater carried with the removed material.
Where the grease trap contains a large volume of relatively clear wastewater beneath the retained grease layer, that water does not necessarily need to be transferred into the compost box. The composting process works best when free liquid is controlled and the removed waste can be thoroughly absorbed into the bulking matrix.
Not suitable for
Keep incompatible waste out
- Toilet or blackwater waste.
- Petrol, diesel, engine oil or other petroleum hydrocarbons.
- Solvents, paint, pesticides or hazardous chemicals.
- Large quantities of disinfectant or aggressive cleaning chemicals.
- Non-biodegradable rubbish or plastics.
- Waste from an unknown or contaminated source.
Finished material
Allow adequate conditioning and maturation
Material should not be treated as finished compost immediately after grease-trap waste has been added.
The contents need time to break down and mature after the final loading, with sufficient carbon, moisture control and aeration maintained throughout the process.
Until a validated maturation protocol is established for the WCTNZ® system, we recommend using fully matured material only in non-food landscaping or returning it to a larger controlled composting process. Do not apply freshly loaded material around edible crops.
Site and regulatory use
An on-site option — not a universal disposal exemption
The Grease Compost Box is intended as an on-site organic-waste management option where the site, wastewater arrangement and local rules allow it.
Commercial grease-trap and trade-waste obligations can be different from privately managed residential wastewater systems.
Commercial food premises should not substitute on-site composting for a required grease-trap cleaning, waste-collection or trade-waste arrangement unless the relevant authority or wastewater operator accepts the proposed method.
