What are Compost Additives and Why do you Need Them?

What are Compost Additives and Why do you Need Them?

The key to making life with a composting toilet easy is maintaining the health of your compost pile. Compost additives help you do just that! Additives help you maintain microbial activity within the pile, speed up decomposition, balance out pH levels, prevent fly strike, negate damaging effects of pharmaceuticals on the compost, and generally prevent problems from arising.

Detailed below, is our range of compost sdditives and their use. Note, these products are also great for fixing damaged compost piles - if you would like to find out about their use in treatment of composting issues, read What are Compost Treatments and Why do you Need Them?

          Compost Black

Why use it: Compost Black is used as a preventative measure against the souring of compost. It is beneficial to all systems, especially to those with heavy urination.
What is it: Compost Black is an ammonia absorbing bacterial substrate which regulates pH balance and improves microbial activity in compost, acting as a catalyst for thermal breakdown.
How to use it: Add 1 cup per week into mixing systems, or 1/2 cup a day for non-mixing systems (based on average system capacity of 2 people full time - if more than 2 users, add another 1/4 cup per person, but do not exceed 10% of the volume of your bulking agent). For convenience, blend with bulking agent mixture (note, pre-made mixes from WCTNZ may already include this additive).

          Compost Green

Why use it: Compost Green is generally used for micro-flush systems, and in other systems in times of peak use/family gatherings, when the toilet is getting a lot of urine going through. It is also a great additive when the system is used by people who are on antibiotics or pharmaceuticals containing heavy metals.
What is it: Compost Green is a powerful additive which absorbs ammonia, balances pH levels, encourages bacteriological growth by maximizing surface for its activity, and acts as a catalyst for thermal breakdown.

          Nature Flush Enzymes

Why use it: Nature Flush Enzymes is used for cleaning composting toilets, and for odour control and decalcification of urinals. It can also be used on a daily basis to maintain composting toilets' cleanliness and encourage bacteriological activity of compost.
What is it: Nature Flush Enzymes is an enzyme-rich universal cleaner that is safe for compost, and facilitates the health of the compost pile. It is an enzyme surfactant which balances pH levels and improves the enzymatic function of compost, helping natural bacteria grow.
How to use it: Use Nature Flush Enzymes for cleaning of all composting toilet parts - for more info read How to Clean a Composting Toilet. For daily use, spray on the inside of the bowl, or do 3 sprays into the composting chamber.

          DEEM Triple Defence Plant Spray

Why use it: DEEM Triple Defence Plant Spray is used on a daily basis in high-use systems to deter insects.
What is it: DEEM Triple Effect Plant Spray is a non-toxic, organic insect spray designed to repel and control over 200 species of insects.
How to use it: Give the compost pile 2 sprays of DEEM Triple Effect Plant Spray daily, followed by 3 sprays of Nature Flush Enzymes to assist microbial activity.

          BBL Tamper Spray

Why use it: BBL Tamper Spray is a great compost catalyst, beneficial to all systems - it increases microbial activity in the pile and speeds up decomposition. It is also used for hydrating compost piles in urine diversion systems, and has an insect repelling quality.
What is it: BBL Tamper Spray is a truly microbiologically active compost additive that adds bacteria into the pile, facilitating breakdown of materials within. It also acts as an insect repellent.
How to use it: Give the compost piles 3 sprays of BBL Tamper Spray daily.
